Nov. 1st, 2013 08:04 pmThe world where Hikaru comes from is one that has been ravaged by war, but has repeatedly found the strength to rebuild. These attacks came from a race within the Earth's galaxy known as the Gnocem, a formerly peaceful and highly magical race that wanted to aid humanity in its rapid advancement, but was corrupted thanks to dark energies polluting the currents that power their talents. Whatever magic there was, it was so dark that the Gnocem were driven to violence, desiring to destroy their potential allies and attempting to destroy the human race.
The Governments of Earth established an organization to prevent another such cataclysm from occuring - PIPE, the Para-Intercontinental Peace Enforcement. A number of families and individuals would either be enlisted or would volunteer their services to defend their countries from the Gnocem; those of particularly noteworthy talent were selected to become Protectors, magic users who could be better suited to fend off the Gnocem threat.
The training that Protectors go through is tougher than one might expect. They usually are trained from a very early age until they hit near adulthood, at which point they receive a rank and become able to make decisions on what needs to be done about the Gnocem assault. It starts from a Commissioner General, to Superintendent General, Superintendent Supervisor, Chief Superintendent, Senior Superintendent, Superintendent, Captain, Lieutenant, Sergeant, Corporal and finally, Patrolman. Protectors start out at the Corporal level and can rank as high as Superintendent General.
The governments, deciding their people needed a life, established a policy of giving people a choice: Stay on for promotions, or leave to do what they wanted. Those who left were required to turn in their badges at the end of their service, preserving them in case the Protector wished to come back; each badge would keep their unique powers intact.
Other things to note is that the year is set in the 3000s, so technology has advanced rapidly. While the PIPE as a whole works fluidly together, they do have disagreements about opinions and, as such, will butt heads occasionally. But, everyone knows that the goal is to help the Gnocem, not eradicate them, and achieve interspecies peace once and for all.
